On paper, Milan were seen as favourites, having won their own group ahead of Barcelona, they went on to defeat Manchester United, Internazionale and PSV Eindhoven. Their talismanic captain Paolo Maldini helmed a world quality team appearing in their tenth final overall.
A nightmare start saw sloppy defending leading to a free kick which Maldini happily took advantage of to score in his seventh final.
